Back in 2018 I went swimming with Sealions in Jurien Bay, WA. It was an amazing and very important experience for me. Those beautiful, playful creatures are the reason I started diving.

So it was clear that I was definitely going back to Jurien bay for the Sealions.

It's only a approx. 3H car ride from Perth and felt like a little road trip to me.

I made a short stop at the Nilgen Lookout which turned out to be a good idea. After a big Roo I also saw a little snake, some lizards and almost ran over a Mantis. I've never seen one outdoors and was totally fascinated.

When I arrived in Jurien Bay it was almost getting dark outside. The next day I had to get up really early for the first of two Sealion swim tours. Fortunately it was only a 5mins. car ride to the harbour/ meeting point.

I had an amazing morning in the water, met some curious sealions and really enjoyed my time. Even if there were some guests aboard who didn't really care about rules. Why do (some) people think they can do whatever they want to?? The guides mentioned clearly during briefing thats it's not allowed to touch the sealions. But some people don't seem to respect rules and nature. That makes sad. Because most of these people do those tours only to get their "perfect shot" for social media instead of enjoying the presence of those creatures. (same thing on others tours, not only with the sealions)

The tour was completely different than it was 5 years ago. Bigger boat, more guests and less sealions.

As the australian sealions are an endangered species (only approx. 12000 left), we should appreciate every single encounter with them. They are so cute and playful like puppy dogs. That's why they're offen called puppies of the sea. But if you meet those cuties always remember they are wild animals and as with every other wild animal: treat them with respect. Males can grow up to 2.5m in length and weigh 250-300kg. Especially around breeding season they can be agressive if you approach them. If you want to swim with sealions to it with people who know how to do it.
